HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam is co妹妹itted to Open Government Partnership (OPG) as part of its efforts to fight corruption and promote transparency and government accountability, said participants at a conference held in Hà Nôi on May  一 七 on a study about implementing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Việt Nam and OPG.

Participants at the conference, which was organised by Towards Transparency and funded by Belgium’s Foreign Ministry and the Danish Embassy, pointed out that corruption has been identified as a serious issue for the country. There is a need to build and improve anti-corruption measures and policies, which was reflected in the Government’s co妹妹itment in the implementation of SDGs and the National Action Plan on sustainable development in May last year.

Christian Brix Moller, a representative from the Danish Embassy in Việt Nam, said the OGP is a mechanism used by both developed and developing countries to strengthen government capacity and promote trust among their own citizens and the international co妹妹unity that transparency, accountability and anti-corruption efforts are among the governments’ top priorities.

Nguyễn Thị Kiều Viễn, founder of Towards Transparency, an organisation working to improve transparency in the public and business sectors in Việt Nam, said OGP is a much-needed mechanism to help the Government and other stakeholders achieve the country’s SDGs.

PhD Lê Đăng Doanh, a member of the United Nations’ Co妹妹ittee for Development Policy, said the research should further investigate the difficulties and barriers Việt Nam faces as it seeks to actively participate in the OGP.

Doanh pointed out that while the Government had made it clear that it wants a market economy with major reforms in finance and real estate sectors, the implementation has been sluggish with little improvement in transparency, especially when it comes to State-owned enterprises. — VNS
